Abstract

Рresents the issues of corrosion of ceramic thermal barrier coatings caused by the molten mixture of calcium, magnesium, aluminium and silicon oxides (CMAS). The influence of structure of the thermal barrier coatings on CMAS-corrosion is examined. The faliure mechanisms of thermal-barrier coatings are discussed in detail. It has been determined that the primary cause of faliure is the difference in the coefficients of thermal expansion between the CMAS-penetrated layers and the rest of the thermal barrier system. Different methods of testing the effects of CMAS-corrosion on thermal barrier coatings are reviewed.
